On July 28th, New York Times Best Selling author Beatriz Williams will be coming to Poe and Company for a night of bubbles and books to feature her latest novel, The Beach at Summerly.
Beatriz Williams is a bestselling author of historical fiction. She has written over 30 novels, including A Hundred Summers, Our Woman in Moscow, The Summer Wives, and more. She is a graduate of both Stanford and Columbia University. Born in Washington, she is now a Connecticut native wither her husband and four children.
“Williams’ particular gift as a writer is peeling back the pages of history to breathe life into the interior lives of women — how they lived, loved, and lost within the expectations and limitations of their time,” according to Entertainment Weekly.
William’s latest novel, The Beach at Summerly, was recently published on June 27th, 2023. The novel captures the summer life in mid-century New England, specifically 1946 on Winthrop Island. The first summer after the “sacrifice of war,” a newcomer comes to Winthrop, Olive Rainsford, with tales of traveling the worlds and involvement in political causes. To Emilia Winthrop, Olive offers a glimpse into a new and intriguing lifestyle. Not to mention that Olive is an aunt to Amory and Shep Peabody, who Emilia have a complex romantic history with. The glamorous summer comes to a halt when an FBI agent arrives and demands Emilia’s assistance in Cold War efforts against the Soviets. Even years later, in 1954, she is unable to escape the actions of “that fateful summer.” The novel currently has over a 4-star rating on good reads and has been called the “Book of the Summer” by numerous reviewers.
The Beach at Summerly is “both a spy thriller and a Romeo and Juliet tale of would-be lovers torn away by fate,” according to The New York Times writer Leigh Haber.
